How to read an option code list

Factory build data arrives as a list of codes rather than plain descriptions, because that is how manufacturers track what went onto each car. A code identifies one specific item — a seat type, a headlight variant, a package of equipment bundled together at order. A spec sheet report pairs those codes with readable descriptions so the list means something without a manufacturer’s reference to hand.

Codes grouped into packages are worth particular attention. A single package code can represent several individual features ordered together, which is why a car can carry equipment that appears nowhere in a straightforward trim-level description.

Model years and market variation

Specifications change mid-generation. A facelift, a supplier change, or a revision to what a trim level includes as standard can all land partway through a production run, which means two cars of the same age and model can differ. Build data is tied to the individual VIN, so it reflects the specification at the point that car was assembled rather than what the model range offered on average.

Imported vehicles are where this matters most. A car built for another market may carry equipment that was never standard in the UK, or lack items a UK buyer would assume were fitted.

Buying without seeing the car

Online auction and remote purchase remove the walk-around that would normally confirm what a vehicle has. A condition report describes what an inspector saw; the build record describes what the factory fitted. Checking the second before bidding is how you avoid discovering after delivery that the specification in the listing was assumed rather than verified.

It is also the cheapest point at which to find a discrepancy. Once a vehicle has been transported and taken into stock, a specification that does not match the advert becomes a dispute rather than a decision not to bid.

What build data does not tell you

A spec sheet is a factory record, not a condition report. It cannot confirm that equipment is still present, still working, or has not been swapped out. Nor does it say anything about the vehicle’s legal or financial standing — for that you need a vehicle provenance report, and for how it has been maintained, a service history check by VIN. Build data tells you what the car was; the other checks tell you what has happened to it since.
